It is also possible to use hydrogen
gas to power an engine, and there are some specifically designed hydrogen cars
and motorbikes on the market. As water contains hydrogen, there have been many
attempts of the years to utilise water as a fuel, the theory being that you
could extract the hydrogen and oxygen as gas (HHO) through electrolysis, and
then use this instead of conventional fuels to power the engine. However no
successful system has yet been verified that will run a car using water as the
only fuel, as technology is not advance enough to extract enough HHO from water
to power engines effectively.
It is possible however, to install an electrolysis system into your car that
will extract a small amount of HHO gas that can be used to supplement your
regular fuel. By injecting HHO into the carburettors or manifold, you can create
a leaner fuel/air mix, without adversely effecting engine efficiency or
performance. This is because the HHO reacts with the fuel to encourage
vaporisation, meaning that smaller fuel particles are being burnt during the
combustion process. As a lot of fuel burnt is actually wasted, the HHO is in
effect just reducing this wastage, which is why engine efficiency and mileage is
improved.
So it possible to suppliement your current fuel with a hydrogen/oxygen gas
derived from water, but with currently technology cars that are run solely on
water are a long way off yet.
